The Challenge

BLAST has been running a very important Counter-Strike (CS) tournament called BLAST PREMIER for the past few years, and fans could only interact with BLAST on platforms like Twitch and Discord.

We wanted to create our own platform to stream our tournaments directly. This decision presented the challenge of attracting an audience that was accustomed to watching all their esport events on Twitch. Convincing fans to switch platforms required offering unique features and a superior viewing experience to make BLAST.tv an appealing alternative.

We created a live experience on BLAST.tv that not only allows fans to watch their favorite teams in action but also provides real-time stats visualization. This deeper insight into each match enhances the understanding of the game and performance of their favorite players.

The design process was structured to ensure a collaborative and user-focused approach, resulting in a refined interface that met both team objectives and user needs. The following steps highlight the key stages of development, from initial concept generation to iterative improvements based on real user feedback.

The following steps highlight the key stages of development, from initial concept generation to iterative improvements based on real user feedback.

  1. Paper prototypes:

This tool was very useful to quickly generate tangible ideas, and thus have all the team members and the relevant stakeholders, contribute and agree on what was going to be the main capabilities and features we wanted to include in the interface.

  1. Data hierarchy:

After conducting an analysis on game events, we selected the most relevant ones and we came up with the idea of a highlights bar, that would allow users to control the way they wanted to view a match.

  1. Wireframes:

We implemented different low-definition design patterns until we found the best fit.

  1. Publish and iterate based on feedback:

After launching each feature we requested for feedback in our live chat, facilitated by our community manager, Hotjar and user interviews.
