The Challenge

The Process

Elements worth preserving
The current play experience supports two play styles that are highly immersive and enjoyable over extended periods:
• Exploratory Play: Technology introduces new patterns of exploration, where children experiment with the functionality and capabilities of the set together with the CONTROL+ app.
• Narrative Play: Children can create scenarios and stories around the Audi RS Q e-tron, turning a car model into a vehicle for adventures, creativity and storytelling.

Elements than need to be re imagined
• The experience follows some of the established gender stereotypes in society and therefore is tied to traditional expectations.
• The narrative elements are presented as an accessory to the main experience and can therefore be easily ignored.
• After having an initial stage, where hours are invested in building, the experience does not guide the player to revisit this activity.

Designing for a more inclusive group
• Children of all genders
• With an an interest for exploratory and imaginative play, they enjoy immersion in imaginary worlds.
• That also enjoy testing all the "what if" scenarios, such as trying different combinations of narrative elements to create stories.

Harvesting Digital Crops
An augmented reality interface shows where certain crops are located in the space.
With a remote control function the app allows the child to drive the truck towards the area of harvest.
Once the tank is full the child needs to upload the harvest into the smart device.

Prototype Learnings
Driving does not allow for sharp curves and therefore it is not possible to recreate harvesting movement patterns. Additionally, children playing in small space won't be able to enjoy this experience.
Building is still not integrated in the play experience, where the child only has to build the truck as part of the setting up.
